Known Gates

Riverboat Gate

  • Fluidity 3
  • Residue 4
  • Utility 2

Location: C03 (#121) The Camelia Belle Casino Riverboat, South Shore

Key: Tossing a coin minted during the year of 1855 through the trap door will open the gate.

Claim: Unclaimed

History: Tragically, in 1855, the starboard boiler exploded on the Camelia Belle; flying debris killed several people and steam scalded another 30 to death. And while the bodies are long gone, the stains of death remain deep in the riverboat casino's hull.

Description: Below in the ship’s hull where the boiler exploded, there is a trap door leading to a hidden section of the boat and upon unlocking the Avernian Gate, the bottom of the hull twists and warps, causing the wood to groan and creak as a watery tunnel opens up. Passing through to the Underworld requires a leap of faith, literally, trusting you won’t drown in the murky depths of the Mississippi.

Tunnel of Love Gate

  • Fluidity 2
  • Residue 4
  • Utility 2

Location: D06 (#213R) South Shore, Vermilion Bay Waterpark

Key: Bring the heart from a freshly buried corpse and ingest a bite of it in front of the cave entrance

Claim: Unclaimed

History: The Tunnel of Love is indelibly marred with the death stains of the 23 couples who died in each other’s arms during the ride's tragic accident of 1939. The attraction was introduced at Vermillion Bay Waterpark in 1932. Riders were taken by two-passenger boats through dark passages, giving them a chance to cuddle and get close. The darkness provided a degree of privacy and the frightening scenes offered a socially acceptable excuse for physical contact at a time when public affection or even holding hands was considered inappropriate.

Tragedy struck, however, when on a warm September evening in 1939, a carbon monoxide leak began killing people in the Tunnel of Love. Boats suddenly started coming out the tunnel exit, one after one, with dead couples in them, having succumbed to the toxic fumes. 46 people lost their lives that day before the leak was found and contained.

Description: By boarding a boat and entering the ride, those who sense gates or ghosts, or otherwise know there is gate there, can jump off half way through, wade through the murky depths of the tunnel water to a cave hidden on the right side. If you can open gates or have the key, the solid cave entrance melts silently away and, half full of water, the cave meanders down and down until you spill out into a black, inky pool of filth in the Underworld.

Abandoned Sawmill Gate

  • Fluidity 4
  • Residue 4
  • Utility 1

Location: F28 (#745R) Rural Bonne Terre, Abandoned Factory (Vermillion Bay Sawmill)

Key: One must cut their palm on the rusty sawblade in the mill (taking 1 lethal) before crawling down and under the mill and feeding the blood to the dirt there.

Claim: Unclaimed

History: Built in 1914, the old sawmill was the site of countless horrific accidents, many of which took the lives of the worker there, especially given to the poor medical attention available and remote location. It wasn’t long before the sawmill was said to be cursed and even haunted, and eventually men refused to work there. In 1938 the mill closed for good, but it leaves a little secret behind.

Description: Using plasm or the key, one can pass through the gate by crawling under the raised dias of the sawmill where the ground will give way like quicksand, swallowing you whole as you make your decent into the Underworld.

Blind Kat Gate

  • Fluidity 1
  • Residue 4
  • Utility 1

Location: B08 (#260R) North Shore, 3 Blind Kats Occult Tea House

Key: Set fire to three cat whiskers at the base of the glass-beaded entryway.

Claim: Unclaimed

History: In 1852, long before the 3 Blind Kats Occult Tea House existed, there was a catastrophic fire in the saloon that occupied the tea house’s spot on North Shore. The fire spread rampantly throughout the block of wood-framed structures and trapped and killed over 75 people as they slept.

Description: Towards the back of the tea house there are two sets of glass beads hiding two different entryways. One opens to the private staff area for the tea house’s psychic hosts only, the other is a walled-over entryway that seemingly goes nowhere. Upon approaching the solid entry and using either plasm or the key, one can cause the glass beads to part and the entry to crumble and shudder away. A step ladder appears, made from human bones, and descending it takes you down into the darkest of darkness and the Underworld below.

Notes: Using this gate takes some finesse. It’s near impossible to do during regular business hours without disrupting everything. The proprietress of the establishment is aware of the gate and is protective of it, but is still inclined to share it. She only asks that people stop by after hours if they’d like to use it. It’s possible for Bound to come sit at 3 Blind Kats and have their cards or tea leaves read while soaking up plasm.

Bayou Gate

  • Fluidity 3
  • Residue 5
  • Utility 1

Location: F37 (#398R) Rural Bonne Terre, Vermilion Bay Campground

Key: Scatter the bones of a hundred+ year old corpse into the water around the Cypress tree.

Claim: Unclaimed

History: People have always claimed this bayou was haunted, as far back as anyone can remember. It seems the swamp claims the lives of a handful of people each year, contributing to the heavy stains of death that have settled over the area like a thick fog.

Description: To the south of the campgrounds proper is a marshy, slow-moving, brakish-watered bayou, populated heavily by alligators, turtles, snakes and leeches. To navigate to the Avernian Gate, one must use a boat of some type and make their way back; deep into the ever-changing bayou landscape. A giant deciduous Cypress with a hollow trunk can be found out in the middle of bayou, all by itself. Using the key or plasm, one must go through the hollow, which will open as the tree shudders and groans, revealing an archway within that opens to a long stairway down into the Underworld.

Notes: Getting into the trunk of the tree off the side of a boat is tricky and the alligators tend to be especially aggressive around that area. Caution is advised.
